A West End hotel has been crowned the best in the UK to cap a stellar year for London tourism.

The plush Haymarket Hotel in Piccadilly, where rooms are around £400 per night, won the title in the TripAdviser Travellers’ Choice Awards.

It was one of 25 hotels in the capital to scoop top prizes in the six categories in the awards – a higher total than New York, Barcelona and Rome combined.

The Haymarket was also placed seventh in a list of Europe’s top hotels, 20th in the world, and second in the UK luxury category.

The Georgian hotel, in Suffolk Place, features 50 bedrooms and suites, an exclusive townhouse of up to five bedrooms, a gym and spa as well as 70-person dining space.

Haymarket’s general manager Lisa Brooklyn-Fuhres said: “We are thrilled and honoured to receive such a fantastic award.

“We truly value our TripAdvisor reviews and constantly strive to give our guests a memorable experience. This wouldn’t be possible without such a brilliant team and this is a testament to all their hard work.”

In a stellar year for the capital’s hotel industry Kensington’s The Milestone Hotel was named the UK’s second best – as four of the UK’s top 10 luxury hotels were found to be based in London.

The Corinthia Hotel London, The Goring and Rosewood London were named sixth, seventh and eighth in the list of top UK hotels respectively.

TripAdvisor’s James Kay said: “These awards recognise the finest hotels across the globe, according to those that really matter – the guests themselves.

“This year is particularly good news for the UK hotel industry, with the UK home to more of the world’s best rated properties than any other country.”

The Lawton Court Hotel in Llandudno, north Wales, was named number one bargain hotel in the world, while the £38 per person per night Millgate Bed and Breakfast in North Yorkshire was named the world’s best B&B.
