This is your chance to get involved with the Sustainable Restaurant Awards, in partnership with The Independent on Sunday.
The awards recognise restaurants and cafes that promote good food sourcing, how well they treat their staff and engage with their community, and the care they take over their impact on the environment. Members of the Sustainable Restaurant Association include everyone from the Michelin-starred Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles to the brilliant steak restaurants Hawksmoor to the Wahaca Mexican street-food chain and Costa coffee stores.
For the first time there’s a category that the public can nominate and vote for, and readers of The Independent on Sunday are invited to tell us about their favourite places. For the People’s Favourite category we want you to tell us about the restaurant that leave you with a full stomach, a happy heart and a great taste in your mouth. By nominating, you’ll be in with a chance of winning two tickets for the awards ceremony on 23 February in London, plus transport, and we’ll put you up at The Zetter, a luxury hotel and a Three Star SRA member. You’ll be mixing with 250 of the biggest movers and shakers in the UK restaurant industry, such as the SRA president, Raymond Blanc, as well as Independent on Sunday editor Lisa Markwell. The shortlist will be published on 1 February; T&Cs apply. For more details and to make a nomination, visit thesra.org/peoplesfave/.
The Zetter Hotel
Award-winning 59-room boutique property, The Zetter Hotel is celebrating ten years since opening its doors in the historical quarter of Clerkenwell. The brainchild of restaurateurs Michael Benyan and Mark Sainsbury, The Zetter Hotel opened in 2004 to wide acclaim. After purchasing the 19th century warehouse, formerly home to the Zetter Football Pools, they set about turning it into a destination for those looking for a hotel with style, comfort and bags of personality. Eco-conscious hoteliers, they have used energy-saving technology and eco-friendly materials wherever possible. This approach also includes water pumped from the hotel’s own 1500-foot bore-hole beneath the building which not only helps make the building self sustaining (flushing loos and cooling the building) but also supplies The Zetter’s bottled spring water that is served in the restaurant and rooms. The Zetter received a Gold award from Green Tourism and is one of just a handful of hotels in London to do so. The Zetter Hotel is a founder member of the Sustainable Restaurant Association. www.thezetter.com
