Cal Simmons Guide to the Best Hotels Fitness Centers

You are supposed to sweat at least once a day – and I certainly don’t mean from stress. Traveling? Away from your gym? Keeping fit no matter where your travels may take you is harder than it seems, which is why I have found 6 of the finest hotel fitness centers that will keep you in your groove.

1.     Amanpuri Resort, Phuket, Thailand

Situated on Pansea Beach, the Amanpuri Resort is a tropical getaway offering all the amenities we know you will love! Go for a swim in the beautiful outdoor pool or play tennis.  Or, if you prefer free-weights and machines, the resort has a spectacular gym.  Offering international channels on every machine TV, you won’t feel far from home while you work out. That being said, I am sure you’ll be much more fascinated by the view. The surrounding glass walls pull the energy from the tropical environment in and gives the guests a view of the clear blue Andaman Sea.  The space feels like an open air Thai hut. Hardwood floors below you and nothing obstructing your view of the scenery, this gym goes way above your normal mirror lined YMCA. Oh and don’t forget your fresh smoothie at the gym’s juice bar!

2.     The Perry Miami- The Spa at David Barton Gym

The Perry Miami offers its guests access to South Beach’s most exclusive Gym and Spa, which was created by famous trainer David Barton.  The energy is high in this gym from the pumping music to the colorful Asian fusion decor.  All 42,000 square feet of this gym are designed to energize and entertain you while you work out.  Take a yoga class before you relax in one of the ten spa treatment rooms, the steam room or decide to take in the ocean view the gym offers. Most of all, get energized to hit Miami’s legendary night club scene on South Beach.

3.     Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur

Overlooking the beautiful Kuala Lumpur City-Center Park,  the Mandarin Oriental houses a gym complex that includes an infinity pool, indoor and outdoor Jacuzzi , machines with personal TVs and a private relaxation lounge. Trainers are available to all guests for complementary fitness tests.  They are there to help you –check out the classes they teach: step aerobics, yoga, body sculpting and kick boxing.  If you’d rather play, challenge a friend to a game of tennis or squash on the Mandarin’s indoor courts.

4. Jumeirah Carlton Tower

You don’t need to buy a ticket for the London Eye in order to get a great view of Big Ben. During your stay at Jumeirah Carlton Tower, all you have to do is go to the Jumeirah’s Fitness Center to experience the beautiful views of the city during your work out!  While taking in London’s attractive skyline, you can choose to run on the treadmill, take a class in the aerobics studio, work on your swing in their state-of-the-art golf simulator or dip in the stainless steel poolDon’t forget to cap off a great workout in the Health Center’s sauna, steam room. Voted the Best Hotel/Day Spa of the Year in 2011 by Pevonia UK and a panel of industry experts, I recommend getting a Swedish Message at the Peek Health Spa London Jumeirah – nothing tops a great workout like a massage!

5.      Four Seasons Cairo, At the Nile Plaza

Escape the Saharan heat in Egypt by visiting the gym in the Four Season’s Spa and Wellness Centre.  With a stunning view of the Nile behind floor to ceiling windows, it is easy to get distracted from your workout at the Four Seasons Cairo, At the Nile Plaza. That is why they have a capable staff of trainers to help you get the most out of their weight room and cardio equipment. They are also available to train you in a private gym sectioned off from the public machines or in the studio classes they offer.   After your workout, I recommend you relax and enjoy the whirlpool, sauna, steam room or complimentary fruit provided by the hotel. Or, better yet, book a treatment at the spa!

6. The James New York

It can be so hard to maintain your normal routine when traveling, especially when it comes to fitness. The James New York offers many different programs to make athletic guests feel at home away from home.   Along with their 24-hour gym and rooftop pool, guests can book a training session with Celebrity Trainer Oscar Smith, who trains at O-Diesel Studio in New York.  The James New York also offers ‘Urban Yoga’ on the rooftop deck of the hotel.  Private running tours of the city are also hosted by the hotel, which guide visitors through 6 miles of tourist attractions in the SOHO neighborhood. Or, rent a bike at Public Bike and get started on a suggested route to New York attractions on wheels!
